What is community composting? Community composting is when people join together to compost food and other green waste, ensuring it is kept out of landfill. While it’s the activity of composting that brings people together, community composting projects can take on many forms. The simplest can be combining forces with your neighbour who may have a compost bin, but it can also involve taking your food & other green waste to a local composting site which may be at an allotment, community garden or workplace. Community composting enables people to compost when they cannot do it on their own. We are here to help. The Food Partnership is supporting a growing network of sites across the city where people can compost. A number of community composting sites are already up and running, but to achieve more we need people willing to take their interest in composting and turn it into something that can benefit their community or neighbourhood and make a positive impact on our environment. There is legislation that you need to be aware of if you want to compost on a community level and there are rules about what can and can’t be transported for compost.
