Existing community composting sites in Brighton & HoveHere are some examples of sites around the city. As you can see, community composting can happen in a variety of places, shapes and sizes! If you or your group have a community composting scheme, we would like to hear about it and how it's going, as well as offer any advice or help if it is needed. Community Centre Coachwerks is a social and educational workspace in Hollingdean. They currently have one black plastic compost bin in the front entrance, where they collect uncooked fruit and vegetable waste. The bin is used by the artists who rent workspaces, as well as by neighbours on Hollingdean Terrace. With one bin filling up quickly they are looking to expand and bring in different types of bins as a demonstration of various compost techniques.
Library Hollingbury Library currently has three wooden bins at the back of the building. Library users are bringing their compost from home while the library staff contribute much-needed dry material such as card and shredded paper. While there was some initial trouble with only putting the correct thing in the bin, posting a simple and clear sign on the bin has greatly eased the confusion.
Allotment site Foredown Tower Allotments have two bins and will take fruit and vegetable peelings from local residents. The plot holders use the resulting compost. This is a new composting project. We are staying tuned to see its success so as to encourage other allotment sites to do the same.
Offices Emmaus Manor Offices in Porstlade houses many different organisations. A series of wooden compost boxes has been set up on the grounds of Emmaus, under the shade of trees, for all the offices to use. Each office and each kitchen has a green caddy that employees add to and take turns taking down to the bins. Initially, the wooden bins were kept locked as the site is in a fairly public space, but we have recently decided to keep them unlocked, without any problems. With lots of coffee being consumed in the Food Partnership office, we have found it best to line the bottom of the caddies with shredded paper (which we have to spare!) to absorb the excess liquid and make cleaning easier. You may find it works for you too! |
