How can I start up a community composting site?

communitycomposting1. Find a suitable site Consider ownership, access and location of the land, transportation of waste to and from the site. Also consider nearby residents and businesses.

2. Let us know! E-mail us on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and we can arrange a meeting to help you get started.

3. Think about funding You won’t need much to get started, but two locakable, enclosed wooden compost bins will cost about £100.

4. Find the people to peovide waste and to help care for the site. Define and agree on what you want to do. It might be helpful to speak to other community compost groups to share resources and tips.

5. Build or buy a bin If you’re not sure how to build or where to buy one, email us and we can help. We sometimes run courses on building your own bin or wormery. Please see our Events page to see if there is one coming up.

6. Register it To compost as a group of people you need to fill out an exemption form registering your site with the Environment Agency. This is so they know who is in charge of the bin in case there is a problem. Contact us if you need any help, but the paperwork is fairly straight-forward.

7. Start making compost! No need for expertise. There is plenty of information about making compost in this section of our website.  For an in-depth understanding of the process, trouble-shooting and more, we also run compost-making courses.  Visit our Events page to see if there is one coming up.
