Tired of throwing your food waste in the bin and unable to compost. How about getting your food waste collected?

carrycaddy2Magpie collect meat-excluded food waste from households. Currently, there is no additional charge for each collection if you also use their opt in scheme and give them your glass, paper and cardboard for recycling.

Magpie Recycling Cooperative Ltd. is working together with Village Green Recycling and their ‘worm army’ to turn your meat-excluded food waste into nutritious vermi-compost.

Vermi-compost is made through the process of vermiculture, using worms to break down compostable materials into a high-quality, nutrient-rich compost.

Why is Brighton & Hove Council not introducing a food waste collection service at this time?

In Brighton & Hove there is currently no food waste collection service. The Council's municipal waste strategy states that this issue will be re looked at in Autumn 2011. This will

  • Review what markets are available for compost made from food waste, and how stable they are
  • Assess the practical implications of introducing a food waste collection service in Brighton & Hove
  • Review the success of food waste collections in other urban council areas

If food waste collection is important to you please let your local Councilllor know, as it is an issue that our elected representatives need to hear about (both for and against) so that they can make the right decisions when it comes to deciding if food waste collection should be invested in.

National research suggests that high rates of food waste collection can be achieved with good engagement with service users, even in areas of high density housing and that seperating food waste often results in an overall reduction in the amount of food waste produced. However we know there would be challenges in introduing a citywide scheme not least because at present there are no facilities within close proximity to Brighton & Hove suitable for processing food waste.

The nearest facility, near Whitesmith, has permission to process 10,000 tonnes, which is not enough to deal with separate collections from a substantial number of households. Planning permission would be required to increase the tonnage processed at the site. Along with the need to invest in new trucks and equipment and potentially change collection cycles implementing separate food waste collections will not happen in the short term.

So in the meantime the Council's focus will be on minimising food waste and doing further work to assess the feasibility of separate collections.

Whilst we welcome the focus on reducing the total amount of food wasted, we are working with a group of interested individuals and organisations locally to keep the issue of food waste collection on the agenda and to lobby the council to ensure that their commitment to review this issue is met.
