Nestled at the foot of the South Downs and right on the coast, Brighton and Hove is a city with a rich food culture and a bounty on its doorstep. Lamb and cattle have grazed the Downs for centuries and the coastal waters have long supplied a thriving fishing industry. And that’s not all. A great variety of cheeses, fruit, bread, eggs, honey, fresh vegetables, wine, cider and beer are all produced in the hinterland, giving residents and visitors the chance to enjoy tasty local food and drink.
Food inspires many local attractions and activities. Brighton is a city with hundreds of restaurants and cafes, it is home to three regular farmers’ markets, and has several shops dedicated to selling fresh, local produce.
Brighton has long been a hub of activity around projects that acknowledge the links between the food we eat, how it’s grown and our health and that of the environment. Across the city there are several on-going projects involving food – cookery classes, growing projects, community cafes, food co-ops. Click here to find out more.
The citywide food strategy and action plan, Spade to Spoon: making the connections, offers a unique cross-sectoral approach to improving access to local and healthy food for all residents. Click here to read it.
