A new food strategy and action plan for Brighton
Spade to Spoon: Making the connections is a new food strategy and action plan for Brighton and Hove. It is aimed at all people working with food in some way across the city – whether in the city council, health sector, community and voluntary sector, production or retail of food, the catering sector, waste sector, etc. Under the strategy, people across the city will work in partnership to achieve the aims laid out in the action plan, which intend to create a food system that creates less waste, sees more food produced locally and employs more local people. The strategy also involves improving the health, knowledge and skills of local people. Click here to read the strategy.
Community involvement has been key in the development of the strategy. In its early stages the strategy was shaped by a series of community workshops. These workshops were attended by people working on food issues across the city – the health sector, the catering sector, schools, and the community and voluntary sector.
A community-wide consultation on the draft food strategy was held from June – September 2005. Feedback was received by a number of individuals and organisations and this has been worked into the final version of the strategy document. Spade to Spoon: making the connections was officially launched to the public on Wednesday 27 September 2006 from 18:00 – 19:00 at the Old Market in Hove.
