I want to grow but don’t have anywhere to do it…

The obvious option is to join the allotment waiting list. Whilst the waiting times are getting shorter, there are still long lists.  But if you are flexible about where your allotment is and are keen to spend time growing, this is a good option.  A standard plot measuring approximately 125 square metres gives plenty of room to grow your own fruit and vegetables for £32.20 per year. Full details about how to apply are available from Brighton & Hove Council's Allotment pages.

But be warned that many new growers can find a large allotment plot overwhelming or too time-consuming for our busy, modern lives. You will need to spend at least 8 hours a week on your plot - more in summer when there are lots of things to look after.

Why_Weight_Banner_Edit_2So why not look again at what space you do have. You can grow a surprising amount on a small patio, balcony or windowsill.  The Harvest project runs courses on a range of growing skills, including growing in containers. Or look for other ways to access land – the local Grow Your Neighbour’s Own scheme matches up garden owners who aren’t using their land with keen gardeners who are looking for space.

Alternatively, you could find a new plot of land to grow on yourself – if you are aware of a green space in your neighbourhood and want to find out who owns it, please contact us.

There are also lots of great community food projects around the city where you can get involved. Many of them have regular volunteer work days where you can learn about growing and share the rewards. The Harvest website lists many of these food projects, which are located all around the city.  Plus, we have set-up a vegetable patch where people can volunteer right in the middle of Preston Park.
